The Men’s Health Urbanathalon…
If you’re someone that enjoys the occasional jog, pick-up basketball game, or even if you just consider yourself to be a “weekend warrior”, you may want to consider trying out one of the many new endurance obstacle course races popping up all over the country.
Some would call it a recent fad that seems to be growing, but for those of you not savvy to the Men’s Health URBANATHLON allow me to enlighten you. It’s a three-city event series comprised of 9.5 to 11 mile endurance races that incorporate city landmarks and urban obstacles set in the streets of three of the largest cities in the U.S.A (Chicago, San Francisco, and of course… New York City)
A month ago I was in upper-east side Manhattan, when I came across a poster for the Urbanathalon. It was a picture of a man jumping on top of a taxi with a phrase at the bottom that read “Re-define your finish-line”. I was intrigued…
I went home and immediately looked up what this event actually entailed and when I realized that I was going to be able to do all the things I always day dreamed about (jumping over taxis and scaling MTA busses), I just couldn’t help myself.
Now I consider myself to be a life-long passionate athlete, but I’ve always been involved in contact sports. Football, basketball and baseball just to name a few, but I’ve never been an endurance athlete. I saw this as an opportunity to take on a new challenge as well as a chance to put together a periodization program in order to prepare myself for what lay ahead.
